How the new Shopify Sections will revolutionize e-commerce management

Reading time: 3 minutes

The online store is the heart of any e-commerce experience: often, it is the center of a brand's strategy, where all positioning and communication come together.
This means it is essential that merchants can offer an online store experience that attracts buyers and showcases their products in the best way possible.

Shopify Sections

However, an e-commerce site is a system composed of code, software, systems, and servers that generate interfaces rendered in apps or browsers. On most e-commerce platforms, creating pages and layouts requires the involvement of developers, making the process slow and expensive. On Shopify, this problem was solved when the Shopify Sections feature was launched in 2017.

New Shopify Sections

The gain in agility in e-commerce management was immense, but Shopify didn't stop there. During Shopify Unite (an annual event in Canada), a major update to the online store was announced, offering access to more powerful tools to help merchants express their brand and delight their customers.
Our new online store design experience will make it easier for merchants to create and customize their storefronts without writing a single line of code. Coming to all Shopify merchants later this year. A new set of features that will allow Shopify customers to focus on providing experiences instead of worrying about web development.
See what's new:

  • Sections on all pages: when Sections was first introduced, it allowed merchants to easily add or move content on their homepage with just a few clicks. Now, we will have section-based editing on any page of the online store, providing maximum flexibility to create and customize pages according to your needs.
  • Main elements: this new feature will allow merchants to define the content that will be displayed on multiple pages (header, footer, banners, and other widgets) and apply changes to all pages of a specific page type simply by editing the master page.
  • Starting points: themes will offer starting points, a selection of preconfigured content sections that will make store setup faster. A merchant can select the desired starting point (wireframe) and simply fill it with their own content.
  • Content portability: content will no longer be stored in themes. Merchants will no longer need to duplicate their themes to make changes to their stores, and they can switch between themes without manually transferring their content. This allows you to create themes for holidays (Black Friday, Christmas, birthdays, etc.), developing them in parallel and publishing changes with 1 click and in real time.
  • Drafts: we are launching a new secure place to make changes to your online stores before publishing. They will be able to change the look and content of existing and new online store pages and publish when they are ready. Like a testing environment, but designed for the end user or marketing team to manage easily.
  • User experience: all these changes are grouped in a new user interface that makes creating navigation stores more intuitive.
  • Apps in sections: now Shopify apps can be embedded in Sections, allowing online store managers to add apps to the online store interface without the need for developers, with complete freedom to choose the position and styles.

As soon as the feature is released, we will send an update to our email list, so subscribe to our newsletter and stay tuned.
