Instagram enables landscape mode videos for IGTV

Finally! It is no longer mandatory to record videos only in vertical format for IGTV.
The company has just announced on its official blog that landscape (horizontal) videos will now be accepted. The IGTV feature was launched last year with the aim of encouraging the production of vertical videos.

We know that this is an evolution from where IGTV started – we believe it is the right change for viewers and creators. In many ways, opening up IGTV to more than just vertical videos is similar to when we opened up Instagram to more than just square photos in 2015. This allowed creativity to increase and engagement to increase – and we believe the same will happen again with IGTV. (translated from the official blog)

Recently, Instagram revamped the IGTV interface to improve the feature's low popularity. The company also adopted a design more similar to Snapchat, TikTok, and Vigo (other social networks very popular among young people), with a feed where all videos appear in an infinite vertical scroll.

What changes?

Adapting to vertical video production created extra work for creators, but with this change, there is a high chance that YouTube content will be replicated or adapted more practically for the Instagram platform, increasing its usage time. Influencers often created content in Stories with external links to their YouTube videos, but now they will be able to keep the user inside the app, improving the overall experience.
